THE ROAD movie poster by Karezoid THE ROAD movie poster by Karezoid
OK. Finally I can show you my design which I produced about year ago. It was commisioned work for INDIKA - ENTERTAINMENT ADVERTISING agency. It was a great privilege to work with guys responsible for THE PIANO, PULP FICTION or OCEAN'S TWELVE campaign. They wanted me to create movie poster for apocalyptic movie THE ROAD based on Pulitzer winning novel by Cormac McCarthy. It was very creative time and 8 hours time zone difference between my hometown, New York and LA where INDIKA work. So I spend lots of night hours on creating some moods which are very close to my favourite themes in my pictures. I tried to catch dark, apocalyptic mood more appropriate to the book but based on some studio materials and photos from the set but it was not enough for producers and unfortunately my designs was rejected and now u can see official posters everywhere. It's more obvious and simple hollywood design...but maybe I'm wrong. So u can compare vision of art by professionals here [link] to my vision here on DEVIANTART. Enjoy!

So beautiful, it's heart breaking--much like book, so I've been told. Watching them walking together, hand in hand, with the little one trying to keep up just grabs me. Excellent work, Karezoid.

I think that they didnt choose yours due to a marketing issue. If you compare your poster with the official one, you would notice that the official one catch your attention before yours. But your design is beatiful, its only about marketing.

You work is beautiful, dramatic, just perfect. Keep on faith!
I loved the movie.

Hey this is totally brilliant, far superior to the frankly poor Hollywood poster. I hope you don't mind, I just featured this on my blog ([link]) - I've linked back but please let me know if you'd rather I removed it :)

Love it!
Creates a subtle dark atmosphere, and yet has something strikingly human and hopeful to it.

this is much better than official poster :), but im not suprised it was rejected, im in comercial and movie posters myself, and often clients dont want to experiment, or take something more interesting, they are afraid it my not work, so safer is to take designs same as others. Sometimes its just suck.
transmissio Featured By Owner Sep 25, 2010
I agree. Too bad that they didn't accept it, but that doesn't mean that yours wasn't better.
anderton Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2010
i know. Im working right now, on posters for two movies, and for each one producer told me hes idea for poster, but beside his concept, i did couple of mine concepts, and of course producer shose his cocnept :P i think my concepts were better, but they are my concepts so i will always said that :P when it will be all over, i will put all those projects in my gallery, and you will be able to judge, witch ones are better ;)

Having both read this book and worked on the other side of the Hwood table in terms of what does and does not put people in seats at the theatre, I can tell you ...

1) I like your poster better than theirs.

2) I completely understand (and agree with them) in the design they chose to use.

Unfortunately (as you probably already know), in any form of advertising, and especially movie/tv advertising, even in very visual, high end perceived "art" films, what sells the product is almost always NOT the best/most creative/most visually satisfying project. I suspect Cormac would like your version much better as well, but his authorship of the book on which the movie is based is the movie's bid for critical cred (Oscar consideration), while the primary consideration for the release posters has to be what will sell the movie to the general public.

And what sells the movie is Viggo.

So while your design/image is both more artistically satisfying and more reflective of the book's mood/content, it isn't instantly Viggo-identifiable enough to sell tickets that will sell based, primarily, on Viggo's involvement, not the content of the movie nor it being based on a pulitzer prize winning book. Unfortunate, but true.

Lucky for us that we get to see your version -- the better version-- here. :)

It is very interesting to compare the artwork selected for the movie and your own submission. Thank you for supplying the link.

I like both your work and the work selected for the film, and would not choose one over the other without knowing more about the ad campaign and movie itself. Nonetheless, I agree with a remark someone else made that your image here tells more of a story that the artwork finally selected. I also felt that your representation tends to draw me into the scene (the two figures are walking into a scene). This work is very well done, whether or not it was chosen by the film makers. Congratulations on this excellent image.

I wonder how come someone not know about the novel "The Road"?? But i guess there are books worth reading I haven't heard about... It was premiered on several occasion on some festivals and is due to come out for the public somewhere in December in January. The tag line sucks. It makes it look as if that is another Mad Max-like flick.
As for the poster. It's very good. But if it's better than official. That's just subjective. I guess the best still would be the original cover art from the book.

Heh, it always makes me laugh when someone makes a movie called "The (Something)" I guess, to me, it makes it seem like it's going to be a realy lame movie. XP
Also, now with the whole '2012' thing, it seem as though there are a lot of apocalyptic movies comming out. With all the hype around it, it makes sense that people would want to see movies about it. Haha, what a way to make money eh?
The caption below the tittle is like, bacicaly the plot of several movies I've already seen. Man, I wonder if it's going to be any good at all at this point.
Well, if you say it's from a winning novel then who knows, it could be good.
This is a real movie right? If so, do you have any idea when it's comming out?

As for the poster, it looks alright. It's a little too grey in my opinion, maybe kind of boring looking. I don't know. Not one of my favourites.

Can you tell me what font you used in "Where the civilization ends...", please.
tsheva Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'm not digging the font but yours definitely tells a story as opposed to the hollywood one [link] .
omcentire Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
I like your poster but i think the thing that killed it for me was the font. destroyed is one of the most over used fonts for movie branding. the imagery should depict the over all feel of the movie whereas the typography should represent the message more. (hence the reason they picked a cleaner serifed type) I'm not sure of the specific requirements for this project but it sounds like there were more than one person attempting to get this job you probably would have been better off setting a mood (which you did, and did well) and avoiding the type work.

I prefer your version, no only because I love your style, but because of the father/son combination. Your poster feels more like a film about a post-apocalyptic drama, where the official one looks more like a cheesy horror movie. Your version has a much better sense of purpose, and a well thought-out composition.
